Practitioner in Children's Residential Care
The Level 4 Children, Young People and Family Practitioner has been written and trialled by employer trailblazers. It was only released in June 2018 and we expect this to be one of our most popular courses of 2019.
You could be working in a number of settings e.g. a children’s home, a residential special school or a secure children’s home. The children might be living on their own or in a larger group. You will take the lead in developing and delivering the child's placement plan and will work with the child to support their health, education, social and day to day needs, playing a significant role in helping them to thrive and fulfil their potential.
The aim of the qualification is not just to train individuals for effective and efficient performance but to prepare them as professionals to undertake a variety of roles and contexts across the children's, young people and family workforce. To show that they have learned their craft they will need to demonstrate that they can competently negotiate their way around a relationship-based environment that doesn't have easy answers or immediate solutions. In a role where there are both planned and uncertain situations there is not always a directive for what to do and how to do it. You must be able to respond effectively, express and exercise your values within your recognised professional, ethical and legal framework, practice skilfully and safely, as well as being able to competently work with others and make decisions on appropriate professional interventions.
As part of this programme you will complete the Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare accredited by Pearson Edexcel.

You will complete Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English unless proof of acceptable exemption can be provided.
You will undergo regular evaluation sessions with trainers and managers. This will enable you to practice key end assessment tasks, including Q&A sessions, practical observations, and professional discussions. To prepare for a final end point assessment, apprentices will be asked to complete a number of activities in-between visits to build confidence and competence in the knowledge, skills and behaviour areas. While on this course you will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare.
The apprentice will undertake the two end-point assessments:
1. Observation of practice by independent assessor in apprentice’s own workplace setting.
2. Competence interview with independent assessor.
Apprentice will submit the portfolio at least three weeks before the competence interview is due to be held. The portfolio will be reviewed by the assessor and will be the subject of the competence interview.
Once complete you will be awarded with a Nationally Recognised Level 4 Qualification as a Children, young people and family practitioner. This is an OFSTED recognised qualification. You can also go onto study the Level 5 Family Manager Qualification in Leadership and Management in a CYP Setting.
You will be provided with a log-in to the SCT website lending access to the course resources.

Do I need to be employed to do this course?
Yes, you do need to be employed in an appropriate job role and workplace to receive funding for this course. If you are not currently employed in a relevant job role or workplace to your desired qualification please check out our Commercial or Short Courses.
When am I going to see my assessor?
Once you have been fully enrolled you will hear from your assessor within 7 working days. Your assessor will arrange to meet with you at your workplace. It might also be a good idea to invite your employer to attend this meeting so that they are also aware of the expectations of your assessor. Your assessor will let you have their contact details as they will be able to provide remote support in between meetings.
How long does it take to get my certificates?
Once you have successfully passed your End Point Assessment you can expect your certificates within 2-3 weeks.
Can I complete my course quicker than 12 months?
Funded Apprentices must undertake a minimum of 365 days in training before you can undertake end point assessment. If you have a requirement to undertake the course in a shorter timeframe please consider our commercial opportunities where duration can be learner led.
Can I complete more than one course at once?
You can only complete one funded course at a time. It is not recommended to undertake more than one course at once but should this need arise please speak to a member of the team who can advise you further.
What happens if I change my job or my employer?
Don’t worry! If you change your employer we can follow you to your new employer (with their approval of course). If you change job role let us know also as we may be able to deliver something more appropriate to your new role. It’s important you keep in touch and we can facilitate.
